Study Examines Effect Of Smoking On Elective Foot Surgery

   Although studies have previously shown a link between smoking cigarettes and delayed bone healing, research has until now been scarce on the effects of smoking on elective foot surgery. A recent study in the Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery finds that bone healing can take as much as 42 percent longer in patients who smoke.

Study Cites Link Between Higher Triglycerides And Diabetic Neuropathy

   A recently published study in Diabetes suggests a correlation between elevated triglyceride levels and diabetic neuropathy, lending credence to the idea that hyperlipidemia is a factor in the progression of diabetic neuropathy.

Can One-Screw Fixation For Subtalar Joint Fusion Be Effective?

   The wide variability of fusion rates for subtalar joint (STJ) arthrodesis has sparked debate about the type, orientation and amount of internal fixation. A recent study suggests the use of one-screw fixation versus two-screw fixation is comparable in regard to nonunion rates for the isolated STJ arthrodesis.

Can Peppering Augment Injections For Plantar Fasciitis?

   A new study in the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association (JAPMA) concludes that a peppering injection technique can boost the effect of corticosteroids and provide greater pain relief.

   The prospective, randomized, multicenter study consisted of 100 patients divided into four groups of equal sizes. Patients in group A received a 2 mL injection of autologous blood. Group B received 2 mL of lidocaine along with peppering injections.

Does Diabetes Thwart The Impact Of ESWT For Plantar Fasciitis?

   In a recent retrospective study of extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT), researchers found a greater than 70 percent success rate in treating plantar fasciitis at three months and 12 months after treatment. Study Identifies Risk Factors For Osteomyelitis In The Diabetic Foot

   Given that osteomyelitis can have serious consequences in the diabetic foot, a recently published study online in Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice identifies several risk factors that may facilitate earlier diagnosis of bone infection.

   Researchers studied 1,666 patients with diabetes from two large primary care facilities in south Texas. They defined osteomyelitis as a positive culture from a bone specimen. Over a mean follow-up period of 27.2 months, 151 patients developed foot infections and 30 of these p
