Why The DPM Identity Crisis Is Much Ado About Nothing
I have never cared much about my identity as a professional. It did not matter to me if the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services considered me to be a physician as long as my patients thought I was a good doctor.
I looked forward to retirement so I could get my first name back. That part has not gone smoothly. More people address me with the “D” word than when I was in practice.
I was attending mass a few weeks ago and when I went up to communion, the Eucharistic minister said, “Doctor, the body of Christ.”
Underscoring The Positive Impact DPMs Can Have On The Lives Of Their Patients
At times, individuals question their purpose in life. They wonder about the significance of what they are contributing to others. This is especially true with most healthcare providers as day after day they give themselves selflessly to the needs of patients.
Passing The Torch And A Positive Attitude To Podiatry Students
Recently we have been reading of podiatrists recommending to the younger generation that they not enter the field of podiatry. This issue has understandably drawn strong responses on either side.
When I first saw this, I had a flashback to when I was in school and someone suggested “finding something else to do (because) the profession is going downhill.” Most of my colleague’s defense was that he was making half the amount he used to make for something like a bunion surgery. I dismissed most of the naysayers because I had way more positive people surrounding me.
Foot And Ankle Surgery: We’ve Come A Long Way Since 1969
I recently had the pleasure of observing an ankle replacement while staying in Seoul, South Korea. Bom Soo Kim, MD, arranged for me to spend a day with his professor, Jin Woo Lee, MD, the Chief of the foot and ankle program at Yonsei University, a prestigious Korean medical school.
Searching For The Elusive ‘Perfect’ Patient
Ever so often we have the rare pleasure of attending to a “perfect” patient. As there is a “melting pot” of personalities in the world, this extraordinary patient may have a different definition from one healthcare provider to the next.
Keeping An Open Mind On Alternative Therapies
How many times has a patient come into the office and said, “What about this thing I heard of on the Internet? Would that work?” Whether it is an ingrown toenail or a severely collapsed foot or ankle, a simple search on the Internet shows thousands of pages of alternative therapies.
Do any of them work?
Would You Choose Podiatry If You Had To Do It All Over Again?
Dinner was pesto salmon pasta with a pinot grigio white sauce. Dessert was apple crisp with vanilla ice cream. I had picked the apples from a tree in our backyard that morning.
Dinner guests included Isaac, my best friend of 30 years, who is a semi-retired pediatrician. Joe, a semi-retired anesthesiologist who I worked with during the past 25 years, was another guest. Joe and I share a love of jazz and had visited jazz clubs in Paris last year. Christina, a 27-year-old with a beautiful smile and new MD diploma, was also with us.
Tales From The Frontlines Of Daily Shoe Battles
Shoe battles occur daily in my practice. Many of my patients want to wear certain types of shoes they feel are necessary to have the “style” to promote themselves in their workplace, to look attractive and also to feel good about themselves.
In many cases, these shoes that are an integral part of the fashion accessories that allow individuals to achieve a certain appearance are also the main cause of the foot pathologies that have brought these people to my office.
