Searching For The Elusive ‘Perfect’ Patient

VOLUME: 23 PUBLICATION DATE: Mar 01 2010
Issue Number:
3 March 2010

Ever so often we have the rare pleasure of attending to a “perfect” patient. As there is a “melting pot” of personalities in the world, this extraordinary patient may have a different definition from one healthcare provider to the next.

Keeping An Open Mind On Alternative Therapies

VOLUME: 23 PUBLICATION DATE: Feb 01 2010
Issue Number:
2 February 2010

How many times has a patient come into the office and said, “What about this thing I heard of on the Internet? Would that work?” Whether it is an ingrown toenail or a severely collapsed foot or ankle, a simple search on the Internet shows thousands of pages of alternative therapies.

   Do any of them work?

Would You Choose Podiatry If You Had To Do It All Over Again?

VOLUME: 23 PUBLICATION DATE: Jan 01 2010
Issue Number:
1 January 2010

Dinner was pesto salmon pasta with a pinot grigio white sauce. Dessert was apple crisp with vanilla ice cream. I had picked the apples from a tree in our backyard that morning.

Dinner guests included Isaac, my best friend of 30 years, who is a semi-retired pediatrician. Joe, a semi-retired anesthesiologist who I worked with during the past 25 years, was another guest. Joe and I share a love of jazz and had visited jazz clubs in Paris last year. Christina, a 27-year-old with a beautiful smile and new MD diploma, was also with us.

Tales From The Frontlines Of Daily Shoe Battles

VOLUME: 22 PUBLICATION DATE: Dec 01 2009
Issue Number:
12 December 2009

Shoe battles occur daily in my practice. Many of my patients want to wear certain types of shoes they feel are necessary to have the “style” to promote themselves in their workplace, to look attractive and also to feel good about themselves.

In many cases, these shoes that are an integral part of the fashion accessories that allow individuals to achieve a certain appearance are also the main cause of the foot pathologies that have brought these people to my office.

Mastering The Collaborative Art Of Podiatry

VOLUME: 22 PUBLICATION DATE: Nov 01 2009
Issue Number:
11 November 2009

Everyone knows that part of the job description of being a podiatrist is dealing with people. Oftentimes, the first thing that comes to mind is being able to interact with patients.

However, as members of the comprehensive healthcare team, podiatrists must be able to work effectively with their colleagues as well. While some professions only face the challenges of associating with co-workers, podiatrists are faced with a double-edged sword of pleasing the patient as well as the many individuals with whom they work.

Emphasizing Care And Conscience Over Productivity Quotas

VOLUME: 22 PUBLICATION DATE: Sep 01 2009
Issue Number:
9 September 2009

I am now in my seventh month of retirement after 34 years as a small town podiatrist. I miss the patient care but must admit that life is great. I am camped on the shore of Hood Canal on the Olympic Peninsula of northwest Washington. The weather is perfect. My wife of 40 years is trying to rein in our nasty 2-year-old Cavalier King Charles spaniel. Never buy a dog just because he is cute.

Joe Podd, a first-year podiatry student, was very happy to finally be starting his podiatric medical education. He had spent the last four years toiling at his undergraduate degree, being accepted into podiatry school and taking out his first student loans.

Staying Positive On Podiatry In The Long Run

VOLUME: 22 PUBLICATION DATE: Jun 01 2009
Issue Number:
6 June 2009

The economy is in a recession. Our 401k values are down. Reimbursement is declining. Overhead is increasing.

Through all the recent news, it is difficult to find some positive light shining through. As a new practitioner, I try to defy the negativity and think about the future.

What kind of letter would I write to a young practitioner if I had more than 30 years of experience in practice? Here is what I think it might say …

   Dear (young practitioner),

Helping Patients Fly Into The Sunset At The End Of Life

VOLUME: PUBLICATION DATE: May 01 2009
Issue Number:
5 May 2009

I have been an unemployed podiatrist for four months since my retirement in December 2008. After almost 34 years of loving my work, I turned the practice over to my partner and a new associate.

Retirement was the carrot I chased for so many years. The first weeks were like magic and then I got bored.

I checked the job board at the hospital to see if my skills matched any positions. They did not. There seemed to be no call for used podiatrists.

There was a job that intrigued me. There was a position open for a mu
