Why A Website Is Essential For Your Practice
I recently saw a new patient in one of my offices and I asked him how he found out about my practice. His reply was very interesting. He found me on his insurance plan but also noted that I was the only one on the list that had a Website. He picked me from the list solely because of my practice website.
Do you have a website? Do you think it is vital to your practice? How many new patients are you losing a month because you do not have a Website? How much money are you ultimately losing due to this?
Expressing Concerns About Health Care Reform
If you are like me, you are concerned about what is going to happen with health care reform but are kind of tired of all the rhetoric you hear each day from both sides of the debate.
Clearly, the system is broken and cannot sustain itself at its current rate of growth. Additionally, the number of uninsured and underinsured is disgraceful for one of the wealthiest countries in the world. I do not consider myself too liberal but I do think health care is an individual right -- not a luxury -- if you can afford it.
A Solution For My Hammertoe Quandary
There are two procedures I absolutely loathe doing, namely calcaneal fracture repair and Lisfranc’s arthrodesis. I do these procedures reluctantly. However, they are no fun to perform and can be postoperative nightmares no matter how well things heal. While hammertoe surgery is much less technically challenging, it is just a notch below on my list of least favorite surgeries. Any first-year resident could do a hammertoe surgery but let him or her try to manage these patients post-operatively and then the resident will really learn something.
Seeking Volunteers To Help Establish Wound Care Haiti
Most of you who read this blog know that I have been involved in a clubfoot program in Haiti for several years now. In my trips to Haiti, another need has become apparent. The need for a wound care center is critically urgent.
I have initiated the process with the help of some of my Haitian friends to establish a wound care center with the hope that this initiative will eventually lead to an entire countrywide program. This is a large, daunting undertaking and I need help. For those of you who are looking for ways to get involved, here is your opportunity to make a difference.
Hosting A Foreign Medical Doctor For Educational Purposes
In addition to going on a medical mission trip, another excellent way to share your knowledge and experience is to host a foreign medical doctor for an educational rotation. Due to state and national regulations, this usually means an observational experience but if you do this in an interactive manner, it can provide an outstanding training opportunity.
I recently had the pleasure of hosting Francel Alexis, MD, for two weeks. For this blog, I asked him to reflect on the six weeks he spent in the United States on his two different rotations. Here are his thoughts.
Establishing Sustained Medical Missions
I want to strongly encourage any of you who are thinking about going on a medical mission trip or would like to go on another one to do so. I would like to offer a little guidance based on my own personal experiences.
Medical Mission Trip: Facilitating Clubfoot Care In Haiti
I recently made my eighth trip to Haiti for an ongoing clubfoot project. It was my 15th medical mission trip overall. I first started going in 2002 and have been hooked every since. I love it and wish I could do it full time. I often have colleagues and friends ask about my trips so I thought I would do a brief travel log of my most recent trip.
We are in the midst of trying to establish a clubfoot foot program for Haiti run by Haitians. “Parachute medicine,” in which one parachutes in a do a bunch of surgery, is of minimal value. I will discuss this in much more detail in my next blog
